Fanaticism towards the Scholars

Part 3

Excessive praising for only their Shaykh with phrases

of superior manner

The people diseased with this illness will say things like, “ Our shaykh is the only scholar around today” , or “He’s the Shaykh of Shaykhs” or He’s the Imam of Imams, in fact he’s Shaykul Islam in this era.”

Imam Al-Bayhaqi placed a chapter in his Sunnan (2/86) : The people of knowledge dislike pride, arrogance, and the obligation for people to address them they way the arrogant are spoken to and remain silent happily while being praised.

There are proofs for the prohibition of excessive praise for a scholar, Imam, or leader.

The Prophet(sallahu alayhi wa salim) said:

لاَ تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أَطْرَتِ النَّصَارَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدُهُ فَقُولُوا عَبْدُ اللهِ وَرَسُولُه.

Don’t be excessive of your praise of me, the same way the Christians are excessive in their praise toward Mary’s son. I am only Allah’s servant. Therefore say Allah’s servant and Messenger.” [ Bukhari 3445]

The Prophet(sallahu alayhi wa salim) said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِتَقْوَاكُمْ ، لاَ يَسْتَهْوِيَنَّكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ ، أَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَرَسُولُهُ ، وَاللَّهِ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَرْفَعُونِي فَوْقَ مَنْزِلَتِي الَّتِي أَنْزَلَنِي اللَّهُ.

“ O people fear Allah! Don’t let Shaytaan seduce you! I am Muhammad ibn Abdullah, Allah’s slave and His Messenger. I swear by Allah, I hate to be raised over the status Allah gave me.[ Ahmed 3/153]

I say [Khalid Al-Misree] : It’s a must to distinguish between a student showing honor and respect for his sheikh compared to the student deeming his teacher being infallible and  error free. Showing honor and respect are obligatory and encouraged in Islam, but excessive praise is prohibited. Sometimes excessive praise can lead to major Shirk similar to the acts the Sufis and Raafidah sect do toward their leaders.

TN : To add insult to injury it has become common among some of the fanatics today to not even label others with their due titles of respect.[1]

[1] For example missionaries from Spubs & Troid will not address Scholars like Sh. Ibrahim Ar-Ruhayli, Sh Saleem At-Taweel and others as Shaykh, but rather they will merely say, “ Ibrahim Ar-Ruhayli or Saleem At-Taweel. And if it’s a caller they collectively target they will address him with his name prior to Islam.
