The Person who the Fire is Forbidden to Burn
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَحْرُمُ عَلَى النَّارِ أَوْ بِمَنْ تَحْرُمُ عَلَيْهِ النَّارُ عَلَى كُلِّ قَرِيبٍ هَيِّنٍ لَيِّنٍ سَهْلٍ
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) narrated the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said : ” Should I inform you about those whom the Hellfire is forbidden to burn or who is forbidden for the Fire? The fire is forbidden to touch every person who is amicable, soft-spoken, and easy to deal with.”[1]

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud. His name is Abdullah ibn Mas’ud ibn Ghafil ibn Habeeb. He was also as Ibn Ummi Abd. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) gave him the Kunya Abu Abdur Rahman before he had any children. He is considered among the Fuqaha of the Sahabah. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud was the 1st person to read the Quran aloud after the Prophet in Mecca. He died 32 H.[2]
- Al-Mawardi said :” This hadith confirms that good character is means for the Muslim to enter Jannah and avoid the Hell-fire. Good character depends on good-nature, friendliness, meeting your brother with a cheerful face, and to avoid alienation from the Muslims and to speak politely. [3]
- “whom the Hellfire is forbidden to burn or who is forbidden for the Fire…” Imam Mulla Ali Qari said : “ This means the fire is prohibited to touch him.[4]
- “The fire is forbidden to touch every person who is amicable…” This refers to the person being kind and polite towards others, and not egotistical and self-righteous.[5]
- “soft-spoken…” The meaning for soft spoken is to talk simple and nice towards others. This is a praise-worthy trait to have which makes people accept you and love you.[6]
- “easy to deal with.” This suggests that the person isn’t aloof and withdrawn from the needs of other Muslims.[7]
