Ubay ibn Ka’b (radi Allahu Anhu) had a basin of dried dates. There were some dates missing, so that night he stood guard over them. Suddenly a riding animal appeared resembling a young man. The creature gave salams, thus Ubay ibn Ka’b returned them. Ubay asked the beast are you a Jinn or a human. The creature replied, “No, I am a Jinn. Ubay ibn Ka’b said: “Give me your hand .” The Jinn extended his hand and strangely enough his hand was like a dog’s paw with hair like a dog’s fur. The jinn said , “ This is the way the Jinn are created” Ubay said: “ That night I learnt something about the Jinn and in their midst is a being more courageous than myself. I asked, “Why did you come here?” The Jinn replied, “News reached me that you love to give charity, so I came for some of your food. “ Ubay ibn Ka’b asked, “What protects us humans against you? “ The Jinn said: “Ayatul Kursi in Suratul Baqarah (2/255). Whoever reads it in the evening will be safe against us until the morning and whoever reads it in the morning will be shielded from us until the evening. The next morning I went to the Messenger of Allah (SallAllahu alayhi wa salam) and told him what happened. He said: The evil one has spoken the truth.”
Benefits for this subject:
- This hadith was collected by Diya-deen Al-Maqdasi in Ahadeeth Al-Mukhtar. It wasn’t narrated within the other nine books of Hadith (Muwatta Malik, Musnad Ahmed, Bukhari, Muslim,Abu Dawud, At-Tirmithi, An-Nisa’ Ibn Majah, and Ad-Darami) [1]
- Although this hadith isn’t collected in those books of hadith there are two other similar stories that happened among the Sahabah (Radi Allahu anhum) .At the end of each story the Prophet affirmed the Jinn / Shaytaan spoke the truth.
1: Abu Hurayrah (Radi Allahu anhu)[2]
2: Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari (Radi Allahu anhu)[3]
- Ubay ibn Ka’b : Ubay ibn Ka’b ibn Qais ibn Ubaid (radi Allahu anhu) witnessed the battle of Badr and the pledge of Aqabah. Umar ibn Khattab used to call him the leader of the Muslims. Ubay ibn Ka’b is among the companions who issued fatawa, was a reference for contemporary issues during his era , and was the first one to write for the Prophet (SallAllahu alayhi wa salam). [4]
- Ayatul Kursi( 2/255) No single verse in the Quran encompasses the meanings that Ayatul Kursi does. [5]
- “Whoever reads it in the evening will be safe against us until the morning and whoever reads it in the morning will be safeguarded from us until the evening.” The timings for the morning to say this verse begins at Fajr and continues until forenoon. The evening period to say this verse starts from Asr and continues until the middle of the night. If a person oversleeps and wakes up at 11.a.m, then inshallah there is no harm if he reads Ayatul Kursi then. [6]
- It’s enough for a person to move his lips and make sure the letters come out of his mouth than recite it loudly. [7]
- Some whispers that a Muslim possibly will be safeguarded against by practicing this sunnah
1. Having doubt in Allah
2. The thought to apostate
3. Having bad thoughts about the scholars
4. The idea to worship Allah by committing unlegislated and Haraam acts.
5. The inspiration to divide and split Muslims
6. The encouragement to fall into shirk heedlessly
7. The coercion to sin. [8]
