left hand

Abdul Azeez bin Baz 1420H (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked.

Question: Is using the right hand for glorifying Allah a stressed sunnah and using the left hand an innovation? Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) use both hands? And what is the proof?

Answer: In the name of Allah the Most Merciful and Most Compassionate. Praise belongs to Allah and may His peace and blessings be upon His messenger, his family, his companions and whoever follows their footsteps.

A Hadeeth has been authentically reported that shows it’s better to use the right hand for glorifying Allah. And it’s alright for a person to use his left hand or both hands for glorifying Allah.

‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to love begin with the right side for putting  on shoes, brushing his hair and in making Wudu.

Bukhari (168)

It’s also reported that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used the fingers on his right hand for glorifying Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) informed the women to count the Tasbeeh using the fingernails on both hands. Therefore using  the right hand or both  hands are permissible for glorifying Allah, but to use the right is better.

Shaykh Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked,” What is the ruling on using both hands to count the praises of Allah? Some people say that there is no authentic proof that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used his left hand, is this correct? And what is the ruling for using the left hand for glorifying Allah?

Answer:  Yes, it is correct that nothing authentic has been reported that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used his left hand. The only thing reported correct is that he used his right hand. However this doesn’t disallow a person to use the left hand. And we only say it’s sunnah to use the right hand for Tasbeeh.
