Verdicts from Allah’s Messenger [ﷺ] compiled by Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

 

Can wudu be performed with water from the sea?

“A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘O Messenger of Allah, we travel by sea and we take a little water with us, but if we use it for Wudu’, we will go thirsty. Can we perform Wudu’, with sea-water?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Its water is a means of purification and its dead meat is permissible.'”[1]

Can we make wudu from water that tampons, garbage and corpses are thrown in?

“It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you perform Wudu’ from the well into which the bodies of dogs, menstrual rags and garbage are thrown?’ He said: ‘Water is pure and it is not made impure by anything.'”[2]

Can we use the untensils of the People of the book to eat and drink with?

Abu Tha’laba Al-Khushni:

I said “O Allah’s Messenger! We are living in a land inhabited by the people of the Scriptures; can we take our meals in their utensils?” He said, “If you can get utensils other than theirs, do not eat in theirs, but if you cannot get other than theirs, wash them and eat in them”[3]

 

What do we do when we think we have annulled our Wudu during prayer?

Abbad bin Tamim:

My uncle asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. Allah’ Apostle replied: “He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something.”[4]

What kind of abulation must be made  for Pre-Seminal Fluid (Madhi)?

Sahl ibn Hunayf:

I felt greatly distressed by the frequent flowing of prostatic fluid. For this reason I used to take a bath very often. I asked the apostle of Allah (ﷺ) about this. He replied: Ablution will be sufficient for you because of this. I asked: Messenger of Allah, what should I do if it smears my clothes. He replied: It is sufficient if you take a handful of water and sprinkle it on your clothe when you find it has smeared it.[5]

What must be washed after the discharge of prostatic fluid?

Abdullah ibn Sa’d al-Ansari:

I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as to what makes it necessary to take a bath and about the (prostatic) fluid that flows after taking a bath. He replied: that is called madhi (prostatic fluid). It flows from every male. You should wash your private parts and testicles because of it and perform ablution as you do for prayer.[6]

The difference between regular blood flow and menses?

Fatima bint Abi Hubaish came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) I get persistent bleeding from the uterus and do not become clean. Shall I give up my prayers?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, “No, because it is from a blood vessel and not the menses. So when your real menses begins give up your prayers and when it has finished wash off the blood (take a bath) and offer your prayers.” Hisham (the sub narrator) narrated that his father had also said, (the Prophet (ﷺ) told her): “Perform ablution for every prayer till the time of the next period comes.”[7]

Does eating Mutton break Wudu ?

A man asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) whether he should perform ablution after (eating) mutton. He (the Messenger of Allah) said: Perform ablution it you so desire, and if you do not wish, do not perform it.

Does eating Camel’s meat invalidate Wudu?

He (again) asked: Should I perform ablution (after eating) camel’s flesh? He said: Yes, perform ablution (after eating) camel’s flesh. He (again) said:

Can we offer prayer in a Sheepfold?

May I say prayer in the sheepfolds? He (the Messenger of Allah) said: Yes.

Can we pray in Camel pin ?

He (the narrator) again said: May I say prayer where camels lie down? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No.[8]

A Person Who Sees Some Wetness (On His Clothes) After Sleeping,but doesn’t remember if he had a wet-dream?

The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about a person who found moisture (on his body or clothes) but did not remember the sexual dream. He replied: He should take a bath. He was asked about a person who remembered that he had a sexual dream but did not find moisture. He replied: Bath is not necessary for him. Umm Salamah then asked: Is washing necessary for a woman if she sees that (in her dream)? He replied: Yes. Woman are counterpart of men.[9]

What must be done when we find menses blood on your clothes.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said regarding menstruation blood that smears a garment, “She should scrape it, rub it with water, then wash it and then she may pray in it”. [10]

What is Wudu ?

I requested the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to talk to me about ablution. He said, “Perform the Wudu’ well (by washing those parts of the body, such as the face, hands and feet beyond what is required, like washing the hands up to the upper-arm instead of the elbow). Cleanse the base of your fingers and sniff water deep into the nose except when you are observing fast.”[11]

What’s the description of Wudu ?

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! How is Wudu’ done?’ He said: ‘As for Wudu’, when you perform Wudu’, and you wash your hands to clean them, your sins come out from between your fingers and fingertips. When you rinse your mouth and nostrils, and wash your face and hands up to the elbows, and wipe your head, and wash your feet up to the ankles, you are cleansed of all your sins. When you prostrate your face to Allah, may He be exalted, you emerge from your sins like the day your mother bore you.'” Abu Umamah said: “I said: ‘O ‘Amr bin ‘Abasah! Look at what you are saying! Was all of that given in one sitting? He said: ‘By Allah, I have grown old, my appointed time is near and I am not so poor that I should tell lies about the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I heard it with my own ears and understood it in my heart from the Messenger of Allah.'”[12]

What is the maximum amount of times the limbs are washed ?

“A Bedouin came to the Prophet (ﷺ) to ask him about Wudu’, so he showed him how to perform Wudu’, washing each part three times, then he said: ‘This is Wudu’. Whoever does more than that has done badly, done to extremes and done wrong.'”[13]

What about passing wind during prayer  ?

“O Messenger of Allah! A man among us would be in the desert and a small smell would come from him, (what should he do) while the water is scarce? So the Messenger of Allah said: “When one of you breaks wind then let him perform Wudu, and do not go into your women in their behinds for indeed Allah is not shy of the truth.”[14]

What’s the duration for Wiping over the footwear?

“The Prophet was asked about wiping over the Khuff. So he said: “Three (days) for the traveler, and one day for the resident.”[15]

Does a woman have to undo her braids for Ghusl for sexual impurity ?

Shurayh ibn Ubayd said: Jubayr ibn Nufayr gave me a verdict about the bath because of sexual defilement that Thawban reported to them that they asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about it. He (the Prophet) replied: As regards man, he should undo the hair of his head and wash it until the water should reach the roots of the hair. But there is no harm if the woman does not undo it (her hair) and pour three handfuls of water over her head.[16]

What is Menses ?

A woman asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) how he should wash herself after the menstrual period. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Take a cotton with musk and purity yourself, and the rest of the hadith was narrated like that of Sufyan.[17]

What is allowed for a man to do with his wife while she is on her menses?

“What is permitted me from my wife when she is menstruating?” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Let her wrap her waist-wrapper round herself tightly, and then what is above that is your concern.”[18]

How long is postpartum bleeding?

He (ﷺ) said: It’s forty days unless you become clean before that.[19]
