A Widespread Mistake that Invalidates the Prayer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

There is a common mistake that many Muslims perform in the silent prayers that renders their prayer incorrect and unacceptable. We will look briefly at some of the scholars’ statements about this issue.

Sheikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: “A person must move his lips for the mandatory recitals and thikr during the prayer if he has the ability. Likewise, for the recommended remembrances of prayer he should do the same; unless there is something preventing him from doing so.This is a well-known edict according to Shafa’i and Hanabala Jurists. 1

Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen said: A person must move his tongue during the prayer. If a person reads with his heart silently without moving his lips, then his prayer would be considered unacceptable and incorrect.2

Sheikh Bin Baz was asked on reading the Quran silently during the prayer and while in a sexual impure state without moving the lips?

He replied: “This isn’t considered reading. Reading is done with the tongue and the lips. Reading must take place to the point he’s able to hear himself. Reading silently with the heart is contemplation and reflection. For that reason, a person who is sexually impure can reflect and contemplate over the Quran. 3

TN : This doesn’t mean that the person moves his lips and tongue reading to point he disturbs the ones next to him. This is prohibited. He must ONLY read to the point that he hears himself.
