Power Shifts & Divine Lessons: Reflections on the Iran-U.S. Conflict and Surah Ar-Rum

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The conflict we are seeing today in the Middle East between Iran and America—and her ally, the occupiers of Palestine—has revealed a lot of things. Every day there is a new plot twist, a different threat, and a new lesson learned as the weaknesses in the ummah continue to manifest. But for those looking closely, there are a few reminders we can reflect on from Surah Ar-Rum.

Corruption and the Root Cause

To begin, Allah reminds us that calamities appear when corruption becomes widespread. He says:

“Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people’s hands have earned…” (Ar-Rum 30:41

The modern lesson here is that the conflicts in the Middle East today are tied to injustice, exploitation, and even open sinning among the people. Those who have the ability to correct these issues have found themselves in a place where they simply aren’t able to do so. While war is what we see on the news, it is just a symptom—it is not the root problem.

Allah also gives us the example of a township that was secure and content, with provisions coming from everywhere, but the people were ungrateful for Allah’s favors. So, Allah made them taste the “extreme of hunger and fear” because of what they used to do.

He Said :” And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that dwelt secure and well content; its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favours of Allah (with ungratefulness). So Allah made it taste the extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad SAW) which they (its people) used to do.”(Al-Nahl 16:112

The lesson for us today is clear: people lived in security, enjoying peace and the opulence of their resources. But when they became arrogant and turned to sin, Allah replaced that stability with instability. Safety turned to fear. This is a warning for those who think their wealth and security come from their own efforts rather than as a mercy from Allah.

The Flip of Power

Since February 2026, the outcome of this war has proven that power shifts are only temporary. Allah reminds us that even when the Romans were defeated, they would prevail again:

“The Romans have been defeated… but after their defeat, they will overcome…” (Ar-Rum 30:2-3

In this modern war, today’s powers—the U.S., Iran, or regional states—might look dominant or weakened one day, but it never stays fixed. Just like the Roman–Persian war flipped unexpectedly, modern wars can reverse in a heartbeat. This conflict has people confused as to why Iran hasn’t surrendered yet! But the Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, the world is sweet and green, and Allah will make you successors in it…” Control of this worldly life passes from one group to another, while ultimate control stays in the Hands of the Lord of all the Worlds.

Who is Really in Control?

We have to remember that Allah controls global events. He says:

“To Allah belongs the command before and after…” (Ar-Rum 30:4

The connection here to the Middle East, Iran, and America is that military alliances, nuclear power, and sanctions are just “means”—they aren’t ultimate control. The world is starting to realize that the outcomes in this conflict aren’t decided in war rooms or by threats to hit power plants and infrastructure. Narcissism mixed with arrogance blinds the misguided, just like it blinded Firaun.

The Trap of Picking Sides

The believers don’t blindly follow sides. Allah says:

“On that day the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah…” (Ar-Rum 30:4-5

I’ve spoken to many Muslims who have chosen the side of the USA because Iran is a Shia government. They feel this pressure to “pick a side” politically. But the Quran teaches that loyalty is to truth and justice, not to propaganda or nationalism.

On the other hand, some Muslims have gone to the other extreme, siding with Iran just because they hate the Zionists and America. In doing so, they forget the crimes Iran has committed against Sunnis in Iraq, Yemen, and Syria. As Imam Al-Albani pointed out, a Sunni Muslim has no side in this specific type of conflict; our side is the Truth.

Hope and the Asymmetric Reality

As Muslims, we have to have hope even when defeat looks certain. The wars being fought today are non-traditional. The media narratives from the early strikes made it look one-sided, but Allah reversed that outcome quickly.

Iran is fighting for survival, and America is fighting for global dominance. While we sit on the sidelines feeling the economy pinch, we have to remember the Prophet ﷺ said: “And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease.”

Allah reminds us that He grants victory to whom He wills—it isn’t just about brute force. Military strength alone doesn’t guarantee success. As Sunni Muslims, we have to stay mindful that real victory is tied to sincerity, justice, and supplication (dua), not just weapons. Iran’s asymmetric war has brought America and her allies to a halt, and people are confused. But for the believer, the plan of Allah is always at work.

The Graveyard of Empires

Allah asks a question that every person glued to the news today should think about:

“Do they not travel in the land, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength, and they tilled the earth and populated it in greater numbers than these have done…” (Ar-Rum 30:9

We look at the USA today with its high-tech drones, carrier strike groups, and its grip on the global economy, and some think it’s invincible. But Allah tells us to look at history. There were empires like the Romans and Persians who “tilled the earth” and built up their populations way more than the people today. They had more raw physical strength and deeper roots in their lands, yet when Allah’s command came, their “superpower” status meant nothing. As a side note, the first superpower to exist was ‘Aad then Thamood.

The modern lesson here is that sophistication isn’t a shield. Just because a nation has the most advanced military or the most complex banking systems, and infrastructure this doesn’t mean it won’t fall.

Allah says: “Surely, Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves.”

When an empire starts believing its own hype—thinking it can oppress people, occupy lands, and manipulate the world without any consequences—it is actually destroying itself from the inside. The “fall” doesn’t always come from a bigger army; it comes from the rot of injustice and the arrogance of thinking they are the ones in charge.

As we watch the back-and-forth between Iran, the U.S., and the occupiers, don’t let the military might fool you. History is a revolving door. If the empires of the past—who were actually stronger than the ones we see today—couldn’t escape Allah’s decree when they became oppressors, then nobody is safe today.

The world is starting to see the cracks. This “asymmetric” war we’re watching is just the modern version of an old story: no matter how high you build your towers, you can’t outrun the justice of Allah. As believers, we shouldn’t be intimidated by the strength of these nations. We just need to look at their end and stay firm on the truth.
