Verily, in this, is a Reminder for men of understanding.[ Az-Zumar:21]

Dawah Lessons from the Mission of Prophet Ibrahim[Abraham]

Dawah Lessons from the Mission of Prophet Ibrahim

By Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdir Razzaq Hamza [1392H][1]

Allah sent Ibrahim [ﷺ] as the Messenger to teach the Chaldeans, Assyrians and the Babylonians that worshipping the celestial bodies was wrong.

Allah said: And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said to his father Azar: “Do you take idols as aliha (gods)? Verily, I see you and your people in manifest error. Thus did we show Ibrahim (Abraham) the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that he is one of those who has Faith with certainty. When the night covered him over with darkness he saw a star. He said: “This is my lord.” But when it set, he said: “I like not those that set.”[6:74-76]

Allah doesn’t set or is covered with his darkness, nor do His signs disappear from His servants.

Allah said: When he saw the moon rising up.” in the East Ibrahim[ﷺ ]said: “ “This is my lord.” The Moon is bigger and brighter than the stars. However when the moon set Ibrahim said: “Unless my Lord guides me, shall surely be among the erring people.”[6:77]

When the Moon set he realized that it was just like the rest of the stars. During that time the erring people were those who worship the brightest celestial body in the sky

Allah said: When he saw the sun rising up, he said: “This is my lord. This is greater.”[6:78]. The sun in his mind at that time was greater than the Moon and planets.

Allah said: But when it set, he said: “O my people! I am indeed free from all that you join as partners in worship with Allah.[6:79]

The Chaldeans, Assyrians and the Babylonians used to worship the planets, the stars, the sun, and the moon. They believed that these celestial beings were responsible for driving the forces of this earth. Those people during that time excelled greatly in Astronomy. They would draw closer to the cosmic universe with sacrifices and supplications. This resulted in the practice of Astrology and Zodiac signs being done. This practice was rampant around the World with Ibrahim’s nation. Even the Jews who were imprisoned by Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon practiced this form of magic.  Nebuchadnezzar was responsible for destroying the Baitul Maqdis and arresting the influential leaders and Jewish scholars in Iraq.

Allah appointed Ibrahim as the Messenger to teach his people that worshipping the celestial bodies wasn’t correct and that they only moved as Allah willed. They were non- living beings, without intellect, or the ability manage and govern affairs. These cosmic beings rise and set at Allah’s commands. Allah is the One who moves everything in this Universe. Ibrahim used the proof that these bodies in the sky set as a result of Allah’s Might. Therefore they shouldn’t be worshipped or prayed to, or have sacrifices made to them. Ibrahim established this publicly in the pure call to Tawheed.

Allah said: Verily, I have turned my face towards Him Who has created the heavens and the earth Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism, i.e. worshipping none but Allah Alone) and I am not of Al-Mushrikun [6:79]

Allah said:  He said: “Do you observe that which you have been worshipping,”You and your ancient fathers?. “Verily! They are enemies to me, save the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists);. “Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me;. “And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink.. “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me; “And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again);”And Who, I hope will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection),”. My Lord! Bestow Hukman (religious knowledge, right judgment of the affairs and Prophethood) on me, and join me with the righteous.[26:75-83]

Free from shirk, misguidance and the worshipping of the creation; Sun, Moon, stars and the planets. Were the polytheists quiet after Ibrahim destroyed their falsehood? No !

Allah said:  His people disputed with him[ 6:80] they argued with him defending their shirk and turning away from the upright religion of Tawheed.

Ibrahim said: Do you dispute with me concerning Allah[6:80] about Tawheed-singling Allah alone in worship.

Ibrahim said: He has guided me[6:80] to Tawheed.

Allah mentioned Ibrahim said: and I fear not those whom you associate with Allah in worship.[6:80] They tried to incite fear into Ibrahim when he turned away from the things they worshipped.

Allah said that Ibrahim said: except when my Lord (Allah) wills something.[6:80] If anything happens to me then it’s not a result of your deities, non-living beings which have no intellect and can’t do anything. If anything happens then it’s because my Lord willed it and wanted it to happen.

Allah said Ibrahim told them: “My Lord comprehends in His Knowledge all things. Will you not then remember?[6:80] Allah created the World and does what He wills and for something to exists He simply says: Be and it exists. Allah has the strength over his servants and not the other way around.

And how should I fear those whom you associate in worship with Allah”[6:81] meaning those non-living creatures and celestial bodies which don’t control their own lives, not to mention someone else’s.

The Philosophy of the Polytheism of Ibrahim’s people

The misguidance and desires of Ibrahim’s people caused them to create and mold sculptures of the celestial bodies they worshipped in order to remind them of what they were when they were set. For example, they had an idol for the sun and the moon in Haran, Chaldean, Mosul, Assyrian, and Nineveh, lit when they were set.

Ibrahim broke the idols

Allah said: Then he cast a glance at the stars (to deceive them), And he said: “Verily, I am sick[37: 88-89] Ibrahim said this to avoid accompanying them in their festival and instead wanted to break the idols.

Allah said: So they turned away from him, and departed[37:90] out of fear the disease was contagious or in a hurry to their party. After they left for the party Allah mentioned that Ibrahim said: Then he turned to their aliha (gods) and said: “Will you not eat[]. Ibrahim did this belittling and ridiculing the idols, as some of the sacrifices given to them were food and they didn’t eat. Next Ibrahim said: “What is the matter with you that you speak not?[37:91]. Ibrahim was teasing the idol for being dumb and unable to speak and think.

Allah said: Then he turned upon them, striking (them) with (his) right hand. Then they (the worshippers of idols) came, towards him, hastening[37:92]

Allah: So he broke them to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it. They said: “Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers.They said: “We heard a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibrahim (Abraham).”[ 21:58-59]

Ibrahim in the Military court and he was the Judge.

Allah said: They said: “Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify.” They said: “Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)?“[21:61-62]

They were unable to comprehend the fact that if they were Gods they wouldn’t have been able to be destroyed by people.

Allah said: [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: “Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it. Ask them, if they can speak!”[21:63]

Ibrahim was mocking their intellects that were blanketed with shirk. If they were truly God then they would have defended themselves or at least mentioned the person who broke them. Should the biggest idol among them have some protective jealousy? It said nothing about its partner. Ibrahim intended to single out one of the idols they worshipped and show them if it had any protective jealousy, so he broke one. Allah has more protective jealously than, and He is free from having partners, He is free from those who join partners with Him in their worship. Moreover, it could have been that Ibrahim wanted to arouse their intellects by waking them up from the heedless state they were in by showing them that the big and small idol did nothing said absolutely nothing. Therefore if they could see they are weak and unable to speak this would mean they were non-living beings unworthy of worship.

Ruling: Allah said: Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): “Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!”[21:64-65]

Here they announced publicly that they knew these idols true nature was the fact the big one couldn’t break the smaller one; as it has a hand but it couldn’t strike, a leg by which it couldn’t walk, ears that it couldn’t hear with, and eyes which it couldn’t see with. These idols were made to remind of the planets when they aren’t visible.

Allah said:  He said: “Do they hear you, when you call (on them)?”Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?”They said: “Nay, but we found our fathers doing so.[42:72-73]

Ibrahim proclaims the truth

Allah said: [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: “Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you, nor harm you?[21:66-67]

You worship something that can’t hear, see, or has the ability to answer you; as you yourselves acknowledge. The thing that you worship was broken and was unable to defend itself and report who broke it. I said the big one broke the small one and it wasn’t able to defend itself against this accusation. I broke its partner right before its two eyes and into two pieces and it didn’t scream, speak, show any sadness, defend it, and have any knowledge.

Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?[21:67] where are your intellects, even after it’s become clear these idols can bring you any harm or benefit.

The verdict to burn Ibrahim [ﷺ]

Allah said: They said: “Burn him and help your aliha (gods), if you will be doing.”[68] and They said: “Build for him a building (it is said that the building was like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!”[37:97]

They collected all the firewood they could even the elder women sold their merchandise to buy fuel to burn Ibrahim []. They believed that burning Ibrahim would be an offering of honor to the Idol Ibrahim broke. They built an enormous furnace with heat so hot that they couldn’t even go near it. This furnace’s fire reached a point in the sky that even the birds weren’t able to fly near it.

Since they were unable to go near this furnace they had an issue as to how Ibrahim would be placed inside. Satan inspired them by whispering the idea for them to build a catapult and place Ibrahim inside. They placed Prophet Ibrahim in the catapult and flung him into the fire. The Heavens, the Earth, and the Angels raised a cry that Allah’s Friend, the one who broke the idol, the Prophet of Monotheism was going to burn. Ibrahim looked up in the sky and said: “`Sufficient for me is Allah, and He is the best disposer of affairs.”

Allah said: We (Allah) said: “O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Abraham)!”And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. And Allah said: “So they plotted a plot against him, but We made them the lowest.[37:98]

The hottest fire one could imagine was made cold and place of comfort for Ibrahim. Allah made Ibrahim the truthful one. This is the religion of the Heavens, the faith of  Musa, Isa, and Muhammad [ﷺ] Whoever follows this religion will be successful until the last day. Look at the Assyrian. Nothing remains of it today but its names and bad memories, the history of Astrology and fortunetelling and corruption. And Allah’s Help is sought.

Kissing the Mushaf between the Scholars- A Fiqh Study

Kissing the Mushaf between the Scholars

Just the other day I was in the Masjid waiting for Thur and to my right was an Egyptian and on my left was an Indian. They were both reading the Quran while waiting for the Iqamah. When the Iqamah was called they both kissed the Quran and placed it back on the shelf. I prayed between them . After the prayer I thought to myself  one is a follower of Abu Hanifah and the other is a follower of Imam Ash-Shafa’i. Then it came to my mind how years ago before I lived in cosmopolitan city I would have said “Bid’ah, Bid’ah.”  In those days it was socially accepted in the Masajid that we rejected so much,so we couldn’t accept a little, or anything that wasn’t known to us. I came home hit the library and said to myself I’ll probably never see those brothers again, but let’s check to find out where the origin of this issue stems from . Muslims from Islamic countries with Islamic family backgrounds follow Sunnah and many times we just aren’t aware of where their acts came from.

The Four Imams view about Kissing the Mushaf

The scholars aren’t in an agreement that kissing the Mushaf is a Bid’ah! To begin there are 4 schools of thought among the 4 Imams on this issue.

1: Abu Hanifah -He held that this act is something allowed[1]

2: Imam Malik– Held the act of kissing the Quran to be disliked.[2]

3: Imam Ash-Shafa’I – considered kissing the Mushaf to be a recommended act.[3]

4: Imam Ahmed– had two opinions about kissing the Quran:

A: Recommended    B:Allowed[4]

The narration about kissing the Quran

Between all of these great scholars there is difference of opinion. It appears that it stems from a narration of Ikramah ibn Abi Jahil.

The Isnad and Matn of the hadith is collected by Imam Ad-Darami in his Sunnan

The breakdown of the men in the Isnad[ chain]

In this Isnad there are total of 5 men with one of the being a companion.

1: Sulayman ibn Harb [ Thiqah Imam ]

2: Hammad ibn Zayd [ Thiqqahtun Thabt]

3:Ayyub As-Sakhtayani [ Thiqqahtun Thabt]

4: Ibn Abee Mulaykah : Abdullah ibn Ubaydillah ibn Abee Mulaykah. [ Thiqhah Faqeeh. He narrated on 30 companions of the Prophet, apart from Umar and Uthman and Talha

5: Ikramah ibn Abi Jahl (رضي الله عنه) used to place the Mushaf on his face and say: “My Lord’s Book, My Lords Book.”[6]

The status of these men was determined by Al-Hafith ibn Hajr in his Taqreeb.

Therefore  when checking to see if any previous Imam commented on the status of the Athar, since they acted by it, I found that Imam An-Nawawi graded the isnad to be authentic in his book At-Tibbyan .  Moreover he said “There is a consensus among the scholars that the Mushaf must be maintained with care, honored and respected. [7]

Do all scholars accept this Athar?

Some scholars have had some difficulty accepting this narration to be proof for kissing the Quran  claiming that it was defective from a 3 angles.

1: The Athar mentioned that he put it on his face and said,” My Lords Book”,so just because he put it on his face this doesn’t mean that he kissed it.

2: Some scholars don’t accept the actions of the companions as evidence in Islam;unless it’s an Ijma

3: The Quran wasn’t compiled until the era of Uthman and Ikramah died during the reign of  Umar [

What appears to be a good response for these three points is since Ikramah placed it on his face then that’s what was understood from the Salaf. There couldn’t have been any other reason for him to place it on his face except than to kiss it. The 2nd point of contention is although scholars differ about the acceptance of acting by the Athar, then what’s clear is their speech is a proof ,and is  used to understand the Quran and the Sunnah. This was the view of the four Imams and used in their Mathab to derive Islamic verdicts.

1:Imam Abu Hanifah said; “We don’t differ or deviate from the speech of the Sahabah.”

2: Imam Malik’s Muwatta is proof that the Athar of the companions are proof according to him.

3: Imam Ash-Shafa’I said knowledge had stages, Quran , Sunnah, Ijma, then the acts of the sahabah that had no known differing about them.

4: Imam Ahmed placed the speech of the companions as the 2 point of evidence after the revelation. i.e Quran and Sunnah. In fact Imam Ahlus Sunnah placed their fatawa over the Mursal Hadith.[8]

The 3rd idea about the Quran not being compiled until the time of Uthman then this doesn’t mean that kissing the palm branches where the Quran was written during the time of the Prophet didnt exist and this is where the Quran was recorded in those days. And Allah knows best.

So from this part of the topic we concluded the act of kissing the Quran was done by a Sahabah and for that reason some scholars allowed it and recommended it. Also there is the area of Qiyas  connected to this  subject.

The areas of Qiyas [ Analogy]

1: The issue of respect and honor. Some of the Shafa’I Jurist made an analogy that since it’s allowed to kiss the black stone, a child ,and the forehead of a scholar, then the same can be applied to the Quran;as its better than everything mentioned.[9]

With everything that’s mentioned we can get an idea when we see certain people .especially those from India, Pakistan where the Hanafi Jurisprudence is followed, or those from brothers and sisters from Egypt where the Shafa’I school is followed  kiss the Quran after their readings. They’re following the jurisprudence that was taught to them in school or passed along from their family members, and practiced in society. In conclusion ,there are some points we can walk away from this discussion with.

Benefits from this lesson

  • Some of the earlier Imams of Hadith allowed kissing the Quran
  • Some of the earlier Imans disliked it
  • There isn’t an Ijma on this topic. Meaning every scholar allows it or prohibits it.
  • Scholars of the past acted by the speech and actions of the Sahabah for their verdicts
  • Scholars used Qiyas for their judgments
  • Sunnan Ad-Darami has athar from the sahabah in its chapters
  • Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdillah As-Sabil [رحمه الله] said: “There’s no problem to kiss the Quran honoring it,sometimes, but not always.[10]
  • Shaykh Bin Baz [رحمه الله]had the same position of Shaykh Muhammad As-Sabil above as mentioned in his Majmou vol 9/289 and vol 24/388-389.
  • Shaykh Ahmed Najmi[رحمه الله] mentioned that it was allowed to kiss the Quran based on the Athar of Ikramah and a story found in Fathul Bari about the Prophet’s visit to a Jew who kissed the Torah and placed it under his pillow.[11]
  • Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen[رحمه الله]considered the act an innovation and was skeptical to accept the companions did it.

It appears that the scholars consider kissing the Quran an act to honor it as something acceptable and not an act of worship and Allah knows best.

The Colors in the Quran

All Praises are due solely to Allah, He is alone and hasn’t any partners. I attest to the fact the whomsoever Allah guides no one can mislead him and everyone Allah leads astray no one or nothing can guide him. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions and everyone who follows their path until the Last Day.

Among the amazing things that has reached through the Quran is the mentioning of certain colors in certain places. Briefly in this article I’ve translated the colors mentioned in Allah’s Speech.

The colors that are mentioned in the Quran are:

colors_poster

  • Yellow

This the first color mentioned in the Quran and it’s mentioned 5 times in 5 different verses.

  • It’s a pleasing color to the eyes

‘It is a yellow cow, bright in its color, pleasing to the beholders

[ Al-Baqarah :69]

  • Corruption and destruction

We send a wind [which would spoil the green growth (tilth) brought up by the previous rain], and they see (their tilth) turn yellow..[Ar-Rum 51]

  • Stiffness, drought and straw

as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw.[Al-Hadid:20]

  • White

This color has been mentioned in the Quran 12 times in 12 verses and some of things its represents and illustrates are

  • Luminance and brightness of the sun at the time of dawn and the morning

until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night),[ Al-Baqarah :187]

  • The color for the people’s faces of Jannah.

And for those whose faces will become white, they will be in Allah’s Mercy (Paradise), therein they shall dwell forever.[Ale-Imran:107]

  • A sickness in the eyes caused by severe sadness

And he turned away from them and said: “Alas, my grief for Yusuf (Joseph)!” And he lost his sight because of the sorrow that he was suppressing.[Yusuf :84]

  • The Miracle of Musa

And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white (with radiance) for the beholders[ Al-‘Araf:108]

  • The Streak between the Mountains

and among the mountains are streaks white.[Fatir:27]

  • The color of the drinks for the People in Jannah.

White, delicious to the drinkers [As-Saffaat:46]

  • Black

Simple Daily Quran Readings for Protection and Rewards

Simple Daily Quran Readings for Protection and Rewards

All praises are due solely to Allah the Most High and The Most Merciful. We ask Allah to bestow His peace and blessings on Muhammad, His Family and those who follow their path until the Trumpet   is blown. Do we spend more time of social media reading pointless posts than reading  Allah’s Speech?  Do we scroll Facebook accounts daily ,but avoid turning pages in Allah’s book? You know the answer to those questions yourself.Reading the Quran offers tranquility in our everyday lives, but how many of us read it daily?

Al-Bara(Radi Allah anhu) narrated A man was reciting Surat Al-Kahf and his horse was tied with two ropes beside him. A cloud came down and spread over that man, and it kept on coming closer and closer to him till his horse started jumping (as if afraid of something). When it was morning, the man came to the Prophet, and told him of that experience. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “That was As-Sakina (tranquility) which descended because of (the recitation of) the Qur’an.”

It’s through the daily reading of the Quran we are able to find that inner peace of mind and spirit. The Salaf used to focus and spend certain times of their days and nights solely dedicated to the Quran. In this article I want to mention the authentic narrations of the Prophet (ﷺ) and His companions which focus on certain verses, actions, and chapters that we can read daily  to earn protection in this life and in the next, along with rewards from Allah.

I pray this paper serves as an important reminder for the slaves travelling in this life back to their Lord. I encourage my brothers and sisters to share this with their children and family. Also I strongly recommend that you choose one of these actions that are easy  for you to regularly maintain, then progress by doing other readings as time passes. May Allah protect us in this life and in the grave.

  1. Bismillah ir Rahman ir Raheem

Ibn Abbass (radi Allahu Anhu) said: ” Bismillah Ir-Rahman Ir-Raheem”, is a verse from the Quran and many people are  unaware of this.”[1]

  • It should be said before reading a Surah from the beginning except at At-Taubah
  • At the beginning of a letter

  1. Al-Fatihah

So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! The like of it has neither been revealed in the Tawrah, nor the Injil nor the Zabur, nor in the Furqan. It is the seven oft-repeated, and the Magnificent Qur’an which I was given.'”[2]

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever does not recite Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid.”[3]

  1. Al-Baqarah

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqara and Surah Al ‘Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqara, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it. (Mu’awiya said: It has been conveyed to me that here Batala means magicians.)[4]

  • It will come as a shape and form so people can see it the same way Allah will do the servants actions so they can weighed on the scales.
  • “Recite the two bright ones” They are called the bright one as they a full with Allah’s verdicts of Islamic law and His names and Attributes , so the person who reads them is guided in this life and they will serve as a light for him in the next life.[5]

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqara is recited.[6]

  • The household that remembers Allah is like the living compared to the dead.[7]

  • Qadi Al- Baydawi said : The devil flees from the house in a state of despair as he’s unable to seduce the family when he notices them serious about their religion and firm in faith.”[8]

The Virtues of Ayahtul Kursi

The noblest chapter in the Quran  is Al-Baqarah and the most honorable verse is Al-Kursi.[9]

Whenever Abdur Rahman ibn Awf entered his house he would read Ayatul Kursi in the four corners of his house. [10]

Nothing prevent anyone reads Ayatul Kursi at the end of each prayer from entering Jannah except death.[11]

  • It should be read after the Tasleem as reading the Quran before the Tasleem is incorrect.[12]
  • The wisdom behind this is that Satan tries to distract us all throughout our prayers and as soon as we finish he comes to us harder to divert us.

Ayatul Kursi’s strength against the devil when read at bedtime.

Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing from the foodstuff. I caught him and said, “I will take you to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)!” Then Abu Huraira described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), “(Please don’t take me to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you.) When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi, (2.255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn.” (When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard the story) he said (to me), “He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan.”[13]

The last 2 verses of Al-Baqarah affect

Abu Mas’ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم : الآيَتَانِ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ مَنْ قَرَأَهُمَا فِي لَيْلَةٍ كَفَتَاهُ

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “He who recites the two Ayat at the end of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”[14]

The Prophet (ﷺ ) said: “Indeed Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created the Heavens and the Earth, and He sent down two ayat from the end of Surah Al-Baqarah. If these verses are recited in home for three nights no Shaytan will come near it.[15]

Jubair ibn Nufair said I made Hajj and visited Aisha and she said to me, “ Jubair do you read Al-Ma’idah?” I said , “Yes”.

  1. Suratul Mulk

COFFEE TABLE 6 copy

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “There is a chapter in the Quran that has only thirty verses and it intercedes for the man that reads it. It removes him from Hell and enters him into Jannah. It’s Suratul Mulk.[24]

  1. Surahtul Kafiroon

The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Nawfal’s father:

Recite (the Surah) ‘Say, O you disbelievers!’ and then go to sleep at its end, for it is a declaration of freedom from polytheism.[25]

Ibn Rslan (844H) said: “Whoever reads this chapter on his tongue sincerely from his heart will be free of Shirk at that moment and in the future.”[26]

  1. Surahtul Ikhlas

The Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one third of the Qur’an in one night?” This suggestion was difficult for them so they said, “Who among us has the power to do so, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” Allah Apostle replied: ” Allah (the) One, the Self-Sufficient Master Whom all creatures need.’ (Surat Al-Ikhlas 112.1–to the End) is equal to one third of the Qur’an.”[27]

  1. Suratul Falaq and An-Nas

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, “Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al- Mu’awwidhatain (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects.”[29]

Narrated `Aisha:

Whenever Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) went to bed, he used to blow on his hands while reciting the Mu’auwidhat ( i.e. Suratal-Falaq 113 and Surat-an-Nas 114) and then pass his hands over his body.[30]

A’isha reported that when any of the members of the household fell ill Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to blow over him by reciting Mu’awwidhatan, and when he suffered from illness of which he died I used to blow over him and rubbed his body with his hand for his hand had greater healing power than my hand.[31]

The Sunnah of Reading a Daily Portion of the Quran

[powr-hit-counter id=f17e7be7_1470578395163]

The Sunnah of Reading a Daily Portion of the Quran

‘Umar b. Khattab reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Should anyone fall asleep and fail to recite his portion of the Qur’an, or a part of it, if he recites it between the dawn prayer and the noon prayer, it will be recorded for him as though he had recited it during the night.[1]

Benefits for this subject:

  • The Imams of Sunnah used this hadith to answer what a person should do if he slept through his routine portion of the Quran.

  • The Routine portion of the Quran is whatever a person places on himself. A person regularly reads this portion of the Quran in order to finish it on a monthly basis, or on every 20, 15, 10, or 7days.[2]

  • This hadith encourages Muslims to hasten to perform Sunnan acts and if a Sunnah is missed a person can make it up.[3]

quran

  • The Salaf were diligent in regularly practicing the reading of their portion of the Quran if they missed it. Abdur Rahman ibn Abdul Qaari said : “ I visited Umar(radi Allahu anhu) and he kept me waiting for a long time. Then he finally let me in and said, “I was making up my portion of the Quran.[4]

  • If a person oversleeps he can read his daily portion of the Quran in the Duha prayer. Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said: If the Prophet (ﷺ) overslept his reading for the daily portion of the Quran or had severe pain which prevented him from praying at night. He would pray 12 rakah the next day.[5]

  • Shaykh Abdul Muhsin Al-Abbadd (may Allah preserve him) said: “Whenever the Prophet was sick or was unable to read his hizb of the Quran at night, then he would offer 12 Rakat the next day making up what he missed the previous night. It was he norm to pray 11 rakat at

night, but if he missed it he would add 1 more Rakah, so that prayer wouldn’t be the Witr for the day. He (ﷺ) would pray these 12 rakah after Fajr and before the time of Thur.[6]

  • Al-Iraqi said: “ The reading the daily portion of the Quran isn’t only restricted to reciting it in the prayer, but also reading it from the Mushaf.[7]

  1. Khaythamah said I went to visit Abdullah ibn Amr(Radi Allahu anhu) while he was reading the Quran. When Ibn Amr (radi Allahu anhu) finished he said: “This is my hizbi(portion) of the Quran I read at night. [8]

  1. Aisha [ radi Allahu anha] said: “ I read my daily portion of the Quran while sitting on my bed.” [9]

  • If a person misses his daily portion of the Quran at night, and then misses it the next day he can combine both portions the next night or the next day. Ibrahim An-Nakha-ee said: “Whenever the salaf had an unread portion of the Quran from the previous night and during the day he was unable to read it, he would read both portion the next night or next day.[10]

We learn from these narrations of the Salaf, that reading a daily portion of the Quran isn’t only a sunnah for Ramadan, but rather it’s a daily Sunnah year round. The Salaf used to finish the Quran all throughout the year in different time frames. Some completed it within 7 days and others every month. What’s important to note also is reading the daily portion of the Quran isn’t restricted to Juz unless a person is reading that daily hizb to complete Allah’s book monthly. And Allah the Most high knows best.

Boycotting the Quran

Boycotting the Quran

Introduction:

All-praises belong to Allah the Most High, and may the countless peace and blessings of Allah be on His final and last Messenger Muhammad. The Quran is a miracle to mankind and Jinn. It is the most relevant book on the planet  that is able to solve any problem. Belief in the Quran is one of the six articles of faith.  The Quran is being abandoned as we speak! Muslims aren’t reading it until Ramdhan. Muslims aren’t memorizing Allah’s book! Muslims aren’t taking time out of their schedules to study this book !In fact in many conferences and lectures the Quran isn’t even taught! This topic will outline some basics about boycotting Allah’s speech and the various ways this can happen and is happening today. Allah’s Help is sought.

The definition:

The dictionaries haven’t mentioned the meaning for (boycotting the Quran), but some scholars have defined the description for abandoning the Quran.

Ibn Kathir said : “ Whenever the Quran was read to the Kuffar  they used make noise and talk loudly, in order to not hear the words. This is boycotting the Quran. Moreover, not learning Allah’s Book and not memorizing it is a form of staying away from the Quran. Furthermore, to not act by its commands and avoid its prohibitions is a type of boycotting the Quran. Lastly to give another kind of speech importance over the Quran such as; poetry, scholars’ statements, music, idle talk and gossip ,as well as the guidance from anyone else is a type of abandoning the Quran.[1]

Allah’s Speech about boycotting His Book

Allah said: And the Messenger (Muhammad ) will say: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur’an (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and orders).[2]

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) complained to Allah about the actions of the Polytheists towards him and the Quran. They were arrogant and refused to accept Allah’s Speech. What’s more is they refused to believe the Quran was Allah’s Speech, thus they turned away from it and abandoned it despite the fact it is obligatory for them to believe the Quran is Allah’s revelation.[3]

Allah said: But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur’an nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.”[4]

Generally speaking the scholars of tasfir view the words “Reminder “in this verse to mean the Quran. This was the legal opinion of Al-Baghawi, Al-Qurtubi, Ar-Razi, Ibn Jawzi, Ibn Al-Qayyim, Ash-Shawkani, As-Sa’di and others.

Prophetic Hadith dispraising Muslims boycotting the Quran

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “[Whoever recites a letter] from Allah’s Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.”[5]

Imran bin Husain passed by a reciter reciting then he began begging. So he (‘Imran) said: ‘Indeed we are from Allah and to Him shall we return.’ Then he said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘Whoever recites the Qur’an, then let him ask Allah by it. For indeed there will come a people, who will recite the Qur’an, asking from the people because of it.'”[6]

 boycotting

The types of boycotting the Quran.

Regrettably,  as Muslims we can quote the speech of a scholar faster than we are able to quote a verse from the book of Allah. Today there are various forms of boycotting Allah’s speech and turning towards speech lesser in value. There are two prevalent types of boycotting practiced today the 1st type is to totally disregard the Book as being revelation and the 2nd is to not read or contemplate over its meanings. Imam As-Suyuti and Ibn Al-Qayyim both detailed the various ways of how the Quran is boycotted.

  • To say something about the Quran that is untrue. This is the action of the Kuffar. Allah says: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur’an (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and orders).[7] Al-Qurtubi said: ThePolythesists said the Quran was magic and poetry.

  • To reject its guidance. Allah says: “Listen not to this Qur’an, and make noise in the midst of its (recitation) that you may overcome.” [8]

  • To not recite it. Ibn Abbass (radi Allahu anhu) said: The person who doesn’t recite the Quran is similar to a destroyed house.[9]

  • To forget the Quran after memorizing it. Allah says : (Allah) will say: “Like this, OurAyat came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected (in the Hell-fire, away from Allah’s Mercy).”[10]

  • To not act by it.

  • To not use it a proof in the fundamentals of the religion.

  • To not use the Quran to cure the sicknesses of the heart, thus a person relies on other types of remedies apart from the Quran. [11]

The verdict for boycotting the Quran

The verdict for the person boycotting the Quran varies based on the form of boycotting he practices. If the person boycotts the Quran by rejecting its guidance then this is disbelief. If staying away from Quran is related to acting by its guidance then this form of boycott makes the Muslim a sinner. He will either be committing a major or a minor sin due to the way he avoids the Quran. For example if a person abandons reading the Quran and has the ability to do so, then he is like shabby house ready to be knocked down. However if the Muslim doesn’t have the ability to read the Quran , then Allah doesn’t burden a person beyond his capacity. When a person forgets the Quran after learning it due his laziness in reciting it then some scholars consider this to be a major sin and Allah knows best. [12]

The Harms from boycotting the Quran

There are always harms that result from boycotting, and sometimes there are benefits, but when abandoning the Quran there 6 harms for the one performing this action.

The heart if it’s not occupied with the Quran, then Satan takes residence.

  1. Boycotting the Quran weakens a person’s faith in Allah and in other unseen beliefs.
  2. Whoever abandons the Quran, doesn’t act by its command and doesn’t avoid its prohibitions.
  3. Whoever reads the Quran in order to earn money will arrive on the Day of Judgment with no skin on his face.
  4. Whoever reads the Quran and doesn’t act by it the Quran becomes a proof against him
  5. Whoever reads the Quran to be seen and known by the people as a reader is a hypocrite.[13]

Principles of Minhaj from Al- Fatihah

fatihah Principles of Minhaj from Al- Fatihah

1. In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

2. All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

  • Allah praises Himself and  has prohibited His creation to praise themselves. “So ascribe not purity to yourselves. [ An-Najm 32] . Allah ordered His creation to praise Him.
  • Allah has prohibited others to listen people praise them and rely on those praises. ““When you see those who praise people (to their faces), then throw dirt in their faces.” [1] We find the total opposite being done today on Twitter, Facebook and other webpage forums. The  scene today is people ludicrously  retweet others  praise for themselves or like them on their Facebook accounts.
  •   “Lord of the ‘Alamin … These words refute “The Big Bang Theory” This World is a proof of Allah’s existence through its regular sequence and order. Allah created everything in this World except the Quran.[2]

3. The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

  • Included in this verse and the previous one are principles for knowing Allah and His attributes.[3]

4. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)

  • This verse contains one of the 6 pillars of faith. Belief in the Resurrection
  • Allah is the Only Judge on that Day
  • This verse serves as an encouragement to do good deeds and a warning against committing evil actions. The Muslim reads this verse and is certain Allah will hold him accountable for every single deed he did is this life. Hence the Muslim fears practicing evil actions so, avoids them.[4]
  • Those previous verses refer to Allah and His rights.[5]
  • This verse refutes ” YOLO “(You Only Live Once) , instead of this we say , you live everyday, but only die once then you’ll be resurrected.

5. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).

  • This verse begins with the correct methodology of worship.[6]
  • Included in this verse is complete sincerity in worship of Allah similar to the Hadith. “ Actions are measured by intentions and everyone will receive what he intends.[ Bukhari 1]
  • This verse is a principle for all acts of worship
  • This means we establish Allah’s commands and laws by following the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam).
  • (We ask for help) The end of this verse means we must show sincerity, follow the Prophet and seek Allah’s help in our worship in order to make it complete.
  • The pronoun ( WE ) in this verse is a proof for the consensus of this nation. It doesn’t say, “ You (alone) I worship and You (alone) I ask for help. Each and every single Muslim must worship Allah alone and seek His assistance. The Muslim should seek Allah’s help in everything from going out to coming home, from eating and drinking and so forth. [7]

6. Guide us to the Straight Way

  • This verse proves that only Allah can guide us . Therefore we must ask Him for His guidance.

  • This verse shows that person must be cautious from self-amazement.
  • This verse shows we should not always rely on Tazikyahs from others ;as we can go astray at any time.

  • The person should avoid saying things like, “ I guided so and so , because I know the truth.”

  • This verse refutes Secularism. The Straight Way includes each and every aspect of the Human being life.

  • This verse proves that the other paths of misguidance are crooked. The easiest way to Allah is the straight path. It’s a known fact that the easiest and quickest way to travel is on a straight path, unlike a road which has right and left turns.[8]

7. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).

  • This verse encourages us to reflect on the previous generations from our Salaf.

  • This verse motivates us to ponder over the people who received Allah’s punishment.

  • This verse categorizes people into 3 categories.
  1. People Allah blessed and guided to the truth with knowledge and by action.

  1. People Allah is angry with. They are guided to the truth with information, but it doesn’t cause them to do any actions. In actual fact, they place a greater importance on who they are more than on practicing deeds.

  1. People Allah hasn’t guided to truth through actions or in knowledge.
  • This verse draws attention to the sin of acquiring knowledge and turning away from practicing it.
  • This verse promotes the readings of the Seerah and History of the Salaf.
  • This verse shows the importance and duty to seek knowledge.
  • This verse affirms Anger as an attribute of Allah.
  • who went astray” This proves that people astray don’t deserve to be punished. In other words, if a person is ignorant of something he doesn’t deserve to be punished.  “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error..”[ Al-Baqarah 286]. Nonetheless, if the person is negligent about learning then he is accountable based on his negligence and not his lack of knowledge. It is a must for the person to learn the verdicts which he require in his life.[9]
  • The entire meaning of the Quran is found in Fatihah[10]

The Difference between the Meccan and Madinan Verses.

All Praises belongs to Allah the Most High. Allah is the One who sustains life and causes death. I bear witness that He is alone above His throne in a manner that befits His Majesty. I also attest to the fact that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His final Messenger sent to mankind and Jinn. To our topic:

This is part of a collection of terminology and jargon that the Muslim should  know and understand.  Included in this series is the difference between a Messenger and Prophet, the difference between Miskeen and Fuqarah, the difference between Islam and Iman and various others. This definition and benefit was taken from a course given at Madinah International University. The selections are my own based on what the ulema have mentioned in their books of Fiqh, Hadeeth, Usul and Tafseer. These definitions helped me to understand the language of the scholars better, in particularly religious verdicts.  And I hope it will assist my brothers and sisters as well. Ameen.

There are three opinions about the way a verse is either described as being Meccan or Madaanee. They are as follow;

  1. 1.    Considers the place:  Whatever was revealed in Mecca is Meccee and whatever was revealed in Madinah is Madaanee.
  1. 2.    Considers the time: This means what was revealed before Hijra is Meccee and whatever was revealed after Hijra is Madaanee.
  1. 3.    Considers the people being addressed. This means whatever addressed the people of Mecca is Meccan and vice-verse.  i.e “Oh you who believe” [ Madinah] and “ Oh people…”[ Mecca]

The strongest  opinion the ulema go with is number 2.

Madinah

Mecca

Address the believers in Madinah with “ O you who believe….” Calls to the oneness of Allah, establishes Prophet hood, and mentions the resurrection, and the rewards and penalties in the next life.
Addresses the people of the book . i.e the Jews and Christians. These verses invite them to Islam and sheds light on the alterations made their books Allah revealed. Mentions paradise, hell, and the terrors of the Day of Judgement.
Exposes the hidden plots and plans of the hypocrites and explains their dangers to Islam. Every surah which has a sajdah  in it is Meccan , except (Hajj)
Explains the legislation, its boundaries, and its obligations. Every surah which has (كلا) is Meccan
Debates the polytheists with intellectual proof and clear cut signs found in the universe’s structure.
Mentions the stories of the previous nations, Prophets, offers comfort for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and reprimand the polytheists.

Fiqh from the ayah of Wudu

Fiqh from the  ayah of Wudu

” O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salat (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles…” (Al-Ma’idah 6)

Issues derived from this verse :

1: Oh you who believe … do the acts that require your faith

2: When you intend to offer As-Salat …This is an order to pray

3: When you intend to offer As-Salat … This is an order to make the intention for Wudu.

4: This verse shows that purification is a condition for the prayer.

5: Purification isn’t obligatory at the time or prayer, its obligatory when a person intends to pray.

6: When you intend to offer As-Salat …Includes all prayers, sunnah, obligatory, funeral, etc.[1]

7: Water is used to washthe body parts in Wudu: Face , both hands, head and feet

8: This verse shows that Istinjah isn’t a part of  Wudu.

9:  Water is used to rinse the mouth and nose .They are both part of the face.

10. This verse shows that washing each limb only once is obligatory[2]

11: When you intend to offer As-Salat … This verse shows that Wudu for every prayer is Sunnah[3]

12: The verse shows that wiping the neck during Wudu is an innovation.

13. The verse shows that Wudu is to be performed in the order. i.e the face is washed before the hands, and the head is wiped before the ankles.
