The Most Difficult Struggle in Life a Man can Endure

The Most Difficult Struggle in Life a Man can Endure

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

أفْضَلُ الجِهَادِ أنْ يُجاهِدَ الرَّجُلُ نَفْسَهُ وَهَواهُ

One of the greatest struggles a man can endure is the fight against his soul’s temptations and his evil desires.

Benefits for this Topic:

  • Allah said: And who is more astray than one who follows his own lusts, without guidance from Allah? [ Al-Qasas:50]
  • Allah said: and follow not your desire for it will mislead you from the Path of Allah. Verily! [Sad:26] Al-Alamah Shiekh Abdur Rahman Al-Barrak said: “The degree at which a person disobeys his Lord following Satan and satisfying his evil desires, is the extent and level in which his tawhid will be tarnished. [1]
  • The word for struggle in this hadeeth is the word jihad, which has four levels included as part of its meaning.
  1. The struggle against the soul’s temptations
  2. The struggle against Satan
  3. The struggle against the disbelievers
  4. The struggle against the hypocrites.
  • The are four levels for the man battling against his soul. The first is he struggles with his inner-being to learn the proper guidance and the correct path of Islam. This is the only way in which the soul can be successful, feel happy in its life and well-being. Otherwise, when this is lost then the soul will be miserable in this life and in the next. The second struggle the man faces against his soul, is acting by the knowledge he acquires. If he doesn’t act on what he knows then his knowledge is of no benefit and will serve to harm him. The third encounter the man faces with his soul is when he invites ignorant people to Islam. If he doesn’t do this then he will fall in the category of people that Allah said about, “Verily ,those who conceal the clear proofs and guidance which we have sent down..”[Al-Baqarah-159].

Hence, his knowledge that he learned won’t benefit him or save him from the punishment of Allah. The fourth, is when a person fights his soul to be patient with the difficulties and hardships that come from people when calling to the Quran and the Sunnah.

These are the four levels that a man will struggle with soul in and when he completes all of these levels then he will be among the true upright callers and nurturers of Islam. In fact, the Salaf are all in agreement that a person can not be called a Rabbani, until he knows the truth, acts by it, and teaches it. [2]

  • Malik ibn Deenar said: “Fight against your evil desires the same way you fight against you enemies.”[3]
  • Fighting against evil desires….is when a person prevents them from acting on his sensual lusts, or to give oneself free rein to do whatever he wishes without restraint, but instead he regularly practices Allah’s commands and avoids his prohibitions. This is among the most difficult kinds of Jihad and your soul’s desires are among your greatest enemies. [4]
  • Fighting against the soul’s temptations and its evil desires is the starting point for one to be able to fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites. In other words, a person is unable to properly battle against the Kuffar and the Munafiqeen until he is victorious over his soul’s temptation and evil desires. [5]
  • Allah tests the servant with his soul and desires, and has made it an obligation on him to fight against his temptations and his evil desires; seeking Allah’s Pleasure. Therefore, day and night the servant is battling his soul until it’s thankful as Allah has ordered it to be. Along with this, Allah’s servant goes to war with his base desires controlling them from doing what He has prohibited. This is an act of obedience. [6]
  • Imam Al-Bayhaqi said: “I asked my teacher Abu Sahl As-Suluki about the essence of worship? He replied: “The essence of worship has two parts, acting in conformity and in opposition. One must conform to the what’s right and oppose his soul’s temptations and evil desires.”[7]
  • This type of struggle requires patience. Whoever strives against his soul’s temptations, its evil desires and Satan and then subdues them will be victorious in this life and in the next, and will be aided by Allah. Thus, he would have mastered self-control. However, whoever is impatient in this battle against temptations and evil desires will be defeated by Satan. As a result of this, he will be a prisoner, who is governed by Satan and his evil desires. [8]

Some of the Most Common Practiced Shirk In the West

Some of the Most Common Practiced Shirk

In the West

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

All praises belong to Allah the most High and may the Prophet Muhamad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) be showered with Allah’s blessings. Tawheed is the most important aspect of the religion. It’s the belief that Allah is Alone without any partners in His Lordship, the Worship and in His names and attributes. The opposite of Tawheed is Shirk, which is to give someone or something a right that ONLY belongs to Allah. Briefly in this article I’m going to mention some of the most common acts of Shirk that some Muslims might still practice, or remain unaware about of the danger of their beliefs.

Sometimes, we’ve heard people say things like , “I swear on my mother’s grave “ or throw salt over your shoulder , or even request that the umbrella remain unopened while indoors. These beliefs are dangerous on the faith of a Muslim, so here let’s look at a few and warn others about them.

Four leaf clover

The four leaf clover is perhaps one of the most commonly known  good luck symbols in the Western world. The four leaves symbolize hope, faith, love and luck. This is the most shared belief; however other people say the four leaves stand for fame, wealth, love and health. At any rate, around the world it stands as a sign for good luck. This belief is partially built on the fact that the chances of finding a four leaf clover are 1 out of 10,000, so if a person finds one ,then they say he’s lucky.

In some Christian legends the belief is Eve brought the four leaf clover with her to Earth when she and Adam were expelled from Paradise. Therefore, anyone in possession of a four leaf clover has been blessed with something from Jannah.

The problem with this belief

Allah said: To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and (all that is in) the earth and Ad-Din Wasiba is His [(i.e. perpetual sincere obedience to Allah is obligatory). None has the right to be worshipped but Allah)]. Will you then fear any other than Allah? And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allah [ Al-Nahl:53]

Each and every blessing that we receive comes from Allah, so we must rely on Him to provide for us our needs.

The Black Cat.

In Western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of bad omens although they are considered to be good omens in other cultures. In ancient times black cats were a symbol connected to witchcraft and evil and still today it’s used in the tradition on Halloween with witches. Depending of your region travelling with a black cat or having one cross a person’s path represents good luck, if it happens in the UK, while in America the black cat refers to bad luck.

The problem with this belief

Some scholars in the past have mentioned that the black cat was Satan. Ibn Taymiyyah believed that since this color was the Devil’s choice then not only was the black dog the devil, but also the black cat.[1]

This opinion really isn’t supported with strong evidence from the Quran  and the authentic Sunnah. However the Black dog being the devil is mentioned.

The black dog as mentioned by the Prophet is the devil.  Abu Dharr said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the all-black dog and he said: ‘(It is) a devil.’”[2]

The only time a black dog passing in our path affects us is when we are praying and there isn’t anything mentioned about the black cat, not to mention that it causes harm, because this belief in Islam is Shirk. Nothing or no one can bring about good or cause harm without the permission of Allah.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The prayer is severed by a black dog and a woman who has reached the age of menstruation.”[3]

The Prophet instructed us to seek refuge in Allah when we hear the dogs bark at night. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When you hear the barking of dogs and the braying of asses at night, seek refuge in Allah, for they see which you do not see.[4]

Friday the 13th

When this date is mentioned often times people think about the 1980’s horror franchise starring Jason Vorhees, but this day is counted as an unlucky day in Western superstition. Basically, whenever the 13th of the month falls on a Friday in the Gregorian calendar then people become paranoid.

There isn’t a definitive reason as to where this belief came from, but some people say it’s possibly connected to the so-called crucifixion of Jesus, who’s imaginary image, is seen seated with 12 men in a painting known as , The Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci. The Christians believe Jesus was crucified on what they call Good Friday, so that’s it! Friday the 13th.

Some people who’ve collected statistics reported that an estimated number of 17-21 million people in America have a phobia of this day. The fear of this day affects people to limit that some will cancel their flights, or change their regular patterns of business.

The problem with this belief is

Allah said: Be informed! Verily, their evil omens are with Allah but most of them know not.[ Al-‘Araf 131]

This verse proves that everything that happens to a person is by Allah’s Will of Qadr, whether it’s good or bad, difficulty or ease. The people afflicted with the Friday the 13 phobia is similar to Fir’aun and his people. Allah said: But whenever good came to them, they said: “Ours is this.” And if evil afflicted them, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Musa (Moses) and those with him[ Al-Araf 131].

The calamities that befell them were a result of their sins and disbelief.[5]

Ibn Abbass said the bad omens that occurred to them were a direct result of their disbelief in Allah.[6]

The belief that a certain day can be harmful so therefore certain actions are avoided out of fear we known among the Pagan Arabs in Saudi Arabia. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There is no ‘Adha, nor Tiyara, nor Hama, nor Safar.”[7]

Imam Bin Baz said: In the summary this hadith proves there is no Adha (transmission of infectious disease without the permission of Allah), unlike the belief from Pre-Islamic period. The people of Jahilliyah used to believe the disease was transmitted normally. The spread of the disease is by the Will of Allah.  If He decrees ,a healthy person gets sick from the illness, and then he does, otherwise he won’t get ill.

(( Tiyara: superstitious belief in bird omens)) The Prophet’s (ﷺ)words here destroy the belief the pagans held about seeing birds move or hearing sounds from them which they disliked. Based on the movement of this bird they wouldn’t do certain acitons.

((Hama: the omen of an owl)) The people of Jahiliyah used to believe that if he landed on a house and cawed or screeched then someone was going to die.

((Safar : a month in the Islamic calendar)) the pagans held this month to be a bad omen.[8]

Walking under a ladder

Another Western superstition which is believed to be a reason for bad luck is walking under a ladder. There are many theories about this so-called unluckiness. One explanation is connected to Holy Trinity belief which is held by many Christians. This belief makes the number 3 sacred along with the triangle. Hence, a ladder opened or leaning up against a wall forms the shape of a triangle. Therefore walking through it is seen as “breaking” the Trinity, which is a crime and considered blasphemous, and serves as an attraction for Satan.

Breaking a mirror

The act of breaking a mirror is believed to bring 7 years of bad luck. The reason for this belief is the mirror doesn’t only serve as a person’s physical appearance, but for the soul as well. For that reason breaking the mirror damages one’s soul and this breakage doesn’t allow it be protected from any future misfortune or bad luck. On the other hand, some people believe that the damaged mirror represents the captured soul, and once its broken its harmed ,and the person who broke it will be harmed as well. Therefore, people thought of some ways to break the bad luck. i.e throw salt over the shoulder, collect the mirror and burn it , or gather it and  place it in a stream.

Don’t Split the Pole

If you find yourself walking down the street with another  person and suddenly an obstruction, like a pole, pops up in your path don’t split it– meaning both of you should walk on the same side of the object as you pass it instead of walking on opposite sides. It’s bad luck. This is a belief famous among some people in the inner cities of America.

The feet being swept by a broom

This myth comes from the deep of North America. There are commonly 2 superstitions connected with it today. The first one is if the person’s foot is hit with the broom then they won’t be able to get married and the 2nd one is if the broom hits the person’s feet then sooner or later he’ll be locked up in jail. As a result of the 2nd belief you’ll find people after being swept by the broom grab it and then spit on it as a measure to reverse what they consider to be an omen.

The problem with the belief

  • Walking under a ladder
  • Breaking a mirror
  • Splitting a pole between 2 people while walking
  • Having your feet swept by a broom

Allah said: (Forbidden) also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allah and sin)[ Al-Ma’idah:3]

These 4 occurrences are all in the same category for the causes of pessimism and belief in bad omens. People find pessimism and the acceptance of bad omen usually in 7 forms.

  • Sometimes they say “ Such and such is a bad omen “
  • Animals such as, crows, owls, monkey, and chameleons.
  • Plants
  • Certain illness, or sickness and this includes seeing a cross eyed person or one with some facial defects.
  • Certain countries, areas and regions. People would say “this place is cursed or haunted.”
  • Days and months.
  • Certain movements, occurrences, mishaps, words or news.

Shirk is found in the belief of these actions from 3 angles;

  • It places a person’s reliance and trust in other than Allah. This is Shirk in the Uluheeyah.
  • The belief that harm or benefit, the managing of affairs, is with other than Allah. And the reason for things to occur results from these actions. This is Shirk in Ruboobeeyah.
  • It ascribes knowledge of the unseen to other than Allah. [9]

Right or left palm itching

This belief is if the left palm is itchy it means that you will give someone money and if it’s your right then it means that you will receive money. This belief causes people to go out to casinos and play lotteries.

The Problem ith this belief

Allah said:  ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: “O Allah, our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread (with food) that there may be for us – for the first and the last of us – a festival and a sign from You; and provide us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers.”[Al-Ma’idah:114]

 Crossing the fingers

Crossing the fingers is gesture used to wish for good luck. Sometimes it is referred to as a sign for begging God for His protection. Often times the expressions used are “keep your fingers crossed”, “cross your fingers”, or “fingers crossed”.

This gesture goes back to the Catholic Church where its Christians would cross their fingers in order to invoke power associated with the cross for protection. Moreover, when the Romans would capture and torture the Christians they would cross their fingers in order to be recognized by fellow Christians.

Today it’s still common to find people hooking their index fingers as a greeting or sign of an agreement.

The Problem with this belief

The only protector is Allah Alone and not Jesus, the crucifix, or any saint.

Allah said:  Say: “Who is he who can protect you from Allah if He intends to harm you, or intends mercy on you?” And they will not find, besides Allah, for themselves any Wali (protector, supporter, etc.) or any helper.[Al-Ahzab:17]

A bird flying in the house

According to superstition, when a bird flies into a home, it is a sign of some important message. If the bird is white or dies while in the home, it is a sign of an impending death.

The Problem with this belief

Allah said: Verily, Allah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).[Luqman 34]

The belief in the bird as a sign that someone living in the house he visits was known among the Arabs before the Prophet Hood of Muhammad. He said:  “ There is no Hamma”, and this is an owl. They used to believe that if an owl landed on the house and screeched then somebody was going to die, so the Prophet clarified this hadith as previous mentioned.

The shirk found in the belief of these actions can either be major shirk or minor and all shirk must be avoided.

It’s major shirk when the person believes that these omens and occurrences, by themselves are the result of attaining good or the befalling of evil, of if a person has fear of them. On the other hand if the person believes that they are reason or signs that something will happen then this is minor shirk.

Imam Bin Baz and Imam Al-Uthaymeen along with Sheikh Fawzan said when we see some something we dislike or   causes us to feel uneasy then we should make the following Dua

(O Allah ! You Alone bring good things; You Alone avert evil things, and there is no might or power but in You).”‘[10]

Imam Bin Baz said: “The Muslim must cling to Allah, rely on Him and do the necessary things according to the Shariah for a good outcome. The Muslim mustn’t be affected by these superstitions nor rely on them. Moreover the Muslim must not base their  plans around these things occurring. If he does then he has committed Shirk, similarly to the Pre-Islamic period. Therefore the Muslim must rely solely on Allah and this includes 2 actions;

1-Having certainty that nothing happens except by Allah’s Will and Decree.

2-Taking the legislated means to remove any mishap that has occurred. i.e dua and patience.”[11]

I ask Allah to save me, my family and the Muslims from falling into Shirk.

The Dangers of Self-Praise and Boasting

Ibn Abbass (Radi Allahu anhu) said Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“Whoever wants to be heard of , Allah will allow him to be heard of and whoever wants to been seen Allah will let him been seen” [1]

 Commentary for this subject:

Allah’s speech about self-praise and boasting:

  • “ O you who believe! Do not render in vain yourSadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allah, nor in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it bare.” [2]

  • “ And be not like those who come out of their homes boastfully and to be seen of men.” [3]

  • And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust.” [4]– Ibn Hajr Al-Haytami said : “This refers to people who do deeds so people can talk about them, thus they have no reward in the Hereafter.” [5]

Meaning for self-praise and Boasting

  • There is a difference between being seen and being heard by the people. Being seen by people refers to publicly announcing one’s actions and being heard implies mentioning one’s speech. Ibn Abdis Salam said “ Desiring to be seen is when anyone does something for other than Allah and longing to be heard of is when a person does something privately then announces it to the people.[6]

  • “Whoever wants to be heard of…” The means a person says something hoping others will praise him for what he’s done. For example he gave admonitions, advised others, refuted falsehood, enjoined piety and forbade evil, or taught others, etc. He desires to be heard and known by means of anything he has said.[7]

  • Whoever wants to been seen…” wanting to be seen can either be major or minor Shirk. If it is done from the hypocrites then its major shirk and if it’s from a Muslim who starts off worshipping Allah in acts such as prayer or giving charity ,and then he improves those acts once he realizes people are watching him, it becomes minor shirk.[8]

  • Ibn Hajr stated the overall meaning of this hadith is a person does deeds seeking relevance and not Allah’s pleasure. Therefore his speech is circulated among the people he wants to fit in with and in the Hereafter he has no reward.[9]

Statements from the Salaf about broadcasting actions:

  • Abu Umamah Al-Baheli (radi Allahu anhu) came to a man in the masjid while he was in Sujud crying and making dua. Abu Umamah said: “If only you would have done this in your house.”[10]

  • Ali ibn Abi Talib (Radi Allahu anhu) said: “There are three signs of person desiring to known and seen.

1: He’s lazy when he’s alone.

2: He’s active when he’s around others.

3: He’s does extra deeds when he’s praised and reduces his deeds and efforts when he’s criticized.[11]

  • Ibrahim ibn Adham said : “The person who broadcasts his deeds seeking praise doesn’t truly believe in Allah”[12]

The verdict about Riya:

  • The Quran, Sunnah and Ijma mention showing off as a prohibited act in Islam. Ath-Thahhabi and Ibn Hajr both mentioned Riya in their book “ The Major Sins” . In fact Ibn Hajr Al-Haytami mentioned it as the 2nd major sin after Shirk.

 Exceptions to the rule :

  • There is no harm in beautifying your voice with the Quran for those praying behind you to make them cry and strengthen their concentration in the prayer. The Prophet heard Abu Musa Al-Ashari reciting and said  “O Abu Musa! You have been given one of the mazamir (sweet melodious voices) of the family of David.’ Following this Abu Musa said : “ If I knew that I would have beautified my recitation  even more better for you.”[13] & [14]

  • Allah said :[Yusuf (Joseph)] said: “Set me over the storehouses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge”[ Yusuf 55] Prophet Yusuf praised himself, for this is allowed when one’s abilities are unknown and there is a need to do so. He said that he is (Hafith), an honest guard and (`Alim), having knowledge and wisdom about the job he is to be entrusted with.

  • Yusef wasn’t seeking a diligently seeking a position of leadership, but rather he had the desire to benefit others             with his abilities and the integrity he possessed and other people didn’t know this about him.[15]

  •   After looking at the aforementioned exceptions for a person to mention their good deeds and abilities, we’re unable to find an instance when a person mentions his virtues ,he criticizes others for not being like him or doing the things he does. Allahu Musta’an

Conclusion:

  • After reviewing the dangers and seriousness of self-praise and boasting how could a Muslim  publicly announce his deeds on twitter?  The salaf never considered their deeds of any true weight and value; since they didn’t know if they would be accepted on the Day of Judgment. Salamah bin Dinar said  “Hide your good deed like you hide your evil deed, and do not be amazed with your own action, for you do not know whether you are happy or wretched (in the Hereafter)”

Practical Advice from Our Prophet Muhammad(صلى الله عليه و سلم)

Practical Advice from Our Prophet Muhammad

(SallAllahu Alayhi wa salam)

Mu’ath ibn Jabal (radi Allahu anhu) said: I asked Allah’s Messenger to advise me, He said: “Worship Allah as if you can see Him and avoid shirk, consider yourself among the dead, constantly remember Allah, and whenever you do a bad deed privately do a good deed privately. Every time you do a bad action publicly, do a good action publicly.

Collected by At-Tabbarani in Kabir (374) and Al-Bayhaqi in Iman (548). Al-Munthari and Al-Albani graded this hadeeth as being : Hasan

Benefits for this topic:

Maasha_Allah_Maasha_Allah_by_Muslima78692

” Worship Allah  as if you can see Him and avoid shirk…”  The shirk the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) is prohibiting here is Riya. Allah has named the act of showing off, shirk.  Worshipping Allah as if you can see him is complete worship with sincerity. [ At-tanweer sharhul Jami’ Saghir by Amir As-Sana’ni (1182H)]

“Worship Allah as if you can see him…”  This means a person is alert and not negligent in acts of worship. Be serious in your worship to Allah and sincere in your intention, and take precaution from shirk. The person aware that someone is watching his every move won’t act wrongly for a single moment.[ Fayd al Qadeer Al-Munawi]

” Consider yourself among the dead…” Verily your death is near. You are coming closer and closer to death. [ At-tanweer]

“Consider yourself among the dead…”  You will journey throughout this world until you reach the next life.  Your visit to this world is like a stranger in a foreign land. Therefore take from this life what you need and then return home to your grave.[Fayd al-Qadeer]

“Whenever you do a bad deed privately do a good deed privately. Every time you do  a bad action publicly, do a good act publicly. ” Follow up a bad deed with a good one, because good deeds erase bad ones. Furthermore this proves that whoever does a bad deed publicly must repent openly. When a person repents publicly it removes worry and stress. [ At-Tanweer]

Whenever you do a bad deed privately do a good deed privately. Every time you do a bad action publicly, do a good act publicly. ” Doing acts in this fashion is more suitable. Furthermore this doesn’t mean that a sin done behind closed doors must be repented for openly and a sin done publicly can only be repented for privately, as some people think. It’s said that the intended meaning for repenting secretly is for the removal of minor sins through righteous deeds.[ Faydul Qadir]

Al-Bayhaqi said: The precise meaning for most of this Hadeeth is the  heart should be filled with the remembrance of Allah, so   sins can’t find any vacancy to occupy it.[ Shu’bil Iman # 544]

Saying “Knock on Wood “

graphic_tlcartknockonwood_01Saying “Knock on Wood “

By Abdul Azeez bin Baz 1420H (may Allah have mercy on him)

“The Verdict on knocking on wood for protection against envy.”

A brother named ‘Amr from Damascus wrote a letter asking about knocking on wood. He wrote,” When mentioning a blessing or favor Allah has bestowed on a brother or a friend some people knock on wood out of fear from the envious. And sometimes they request other people to do it by saying, “Knock on Wood”. What is the verdict on this action? May Allah reward you abundantly.”

As-Shaykh Bin Baz (may Allah rest him in Jannah) responded saying, “ This act is forbidden and contains corrupt belief. It is impermissible to knock on wood for protection against the envious. The act  legislated in Islam for the person who obtained Allah’s favor or a smooth progress is thanking and praising Allah. Additionally, the person must ask Allah for all His blessings and His help in being thankful. This deed is found in the verses;

And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.”[ Ibrahim 7]

فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ

Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.[ Baqarah 152]
