Atonement for the One Who Intentionally Breaks Fast

In Ramadhan

Abu Hurayrah :The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone breaks his fast one day in Ramadan without a concession granted to him by Allah, a perpetual fast could not atone for it. [1]

This Hadith has been graded as being weak by Imam Al-Bukhari, Ibn Al-Khuzaymah,Al-Munthiri,and Al-Baghawi. There is a similar narration collected by Imam At-Tirmithi in his Jami’ with the extra wording, “ Illness”

Abu Hurayrah :The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone breaks his fast one day in Ramadan without a concession granted to him by Allah or an Illness, then an entire perpetual fast could not atone for it.[2]

The isnad of this hadith has some issues which prevent it from being authentic. Among them are in the isnad is Mutawas who narrates on his father and they are both unknown. Along with this Ibn Hajr in Fathul Bari mentioned that there is doubt as to whether ibn Mutawas heard hadith from Abu Hurayrah,or not.[3]

The one who intentionally breaks his fast in Ramadhan must repent and make up that day.

Imam An-Nawawi said this is what the jurists generally view to be correct and to be done.[4]

Ibn Abdul Bar said: There is a cosensus among the scholars that the person who intentionally doesn’t fast in Ramadhan, but still believes that it is a duty. The only reason he didn’t fast was due to his malicious and arrogant behavior. However later he repents, so he then must make up the fast.[5]

Ibn Hubayrah said: There is an Ijma that the healthy resident who breaks his fast by either drinking, or eating during Ramadhan must make up that day.[6]

Ibn Quddamah said: Whoever breaks his fast intentionally, must make it up. There is no difference of opinion regarding this issue.[7]

Al-Hattab said: Whoever breaks his fast with a valid reason or not then he hast to make it. There is a consensus among the scholars about this issue.[8]
